Welcome!

Hi and Welcome to Food=Life. The kitchen is officially open. I was actually thinking a good first post would be to introduce you to my kitchen, and then I saw that Ilva at Lucullian Delights was hosting a “Show Us Your Kitchen” event and that was all I needed.

Food=Life is a blog about the intersection of food, cooking, culture and communication. My interest in food extends beyond recipes and cooking to food writing and food reading, food culture and food stories, oh yes, and a love of obsession with fetish for kitchen gadgets. But enough about me, let me introduce you to my kitchen…

My Kitchen

It’s definitely a cozy kitchen. What I like = the spice rack on the back wall (under the hanging pots). The top shelf is for bottles that I use frequently (olive oil, balsamic vinegar, rice wine vinegar, Tabasco, etc.). The other five shelves are spices arranged alphabetically (and a rice cooker on the bottom shelf). I created this myself. I’ve never found spice racks that work for me so when we moved here I decided to design my own spice shelves. I measured the kitchen and actually found shelves as Ikea that didn’t need to be cut. The clearance between the shelves and the freezer door (when open) is about an inch. It’s close but it works.

What I don’t like = that there’s not enough counter space to roll out pizza dough. This may be my incentive to learn to hand-toss my pizza dough!!

In addition to what you see in the picture, I have a few things stored on a shelf in my office (just across the hall from the cutout over the sink). Even some things that get used frequently, like my wok, end up back there just for safe keeping.

The newest addition to my kitchen is the Cuisinart 14-cup food processor that I got for Christmas (it’s between the white blender and chrome toaster in picture on the left above). I love it. I think I’ve used it every day since 12/28 (when I got back from Christmas traveling). It’s totally awesome, but I will save that for another post, or 50!

So there you have it, my humble kitchen.

I did leave a comment when you sent me the link the first time but it has obviously disappeared! I’m sorry! Nice, cosy kitchen!

Thanks Kristen! That’s one of the benefits of such a small space - it encourages organization! :)

I guess you love to display everything in your kitchen unlike most of us shutting in the closets. Yet it looks compact. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Kalyn - thanks so much for dropping by and for your kind words!

Hi Anjali - actually displying everything isn’t so much a choice as a necessity since I only have a little more cupboard space than I have counter space! But it has it benefits too. Thanks for visiting!

It doesn’t show - but do you have a table in your kitchen? If you do then there’s your pizza rolling space! Your kitchen makes mine look positively grand in scale. I’m coming to the conclusion that small kitchens are the “norm”. Thanks for showing us your kitchen Kelly.

Kelly~ wow! You have done an amazing job in a small space! I admire anyone who can alphabetize their spices…and keep them that way.

Thanks for the table idea Sally. There’s no table in the kitchen but it’s close enough that it might be a workable solution. I’ll have to give it a try!

Hi Sandi - thanks for stopping by!
