I took advantage of the weekend to experiment with a breakfast casserole. Inspired in equal parts by having time to fix a breakfast that involved more than cereal and milk, having some hashbrowns that I wanted to use and being hungry for a substantial breakfast, I started looking around for ideas.

I’m a big fan of Allrecipes.com, so I started there. I found a recipe called Breakfast Pizza I. One of the features that I especially like about Allrecipes is the feedback left by others about the recipes. My standard criteria for even looking at a recipe is that it has to have between 4 and 5 stars and it has to have at least 30 reviews (I modify this when looking for vegetarian recipes because they often don’t get that many reviews, sigh.) And I rarely start fixing a recipe without reading at least a page or two of the reviews becuase often there are many good suggestions, modifications, etc. to be found in the reviews.

At any rate, after reading some of the reviews I decided this recipe was worth a try. The original recipe called for refridgerated crescent rolls, separated into triangles and then pieced back together into a circle on a pizza pan. I consider myself pretty good when it comes to geometry and crescent rolls, but I couldn’t figure out how to make get them nicely into a circle so I opted for lining the bottom of a 9×13 pan with the crescent roll pieces. That worked out pretty well. I also pre-baked the crust a little bit before adding any toppings.

I don’t eat meat, so I exchanged meatless “crumbles” for the sausage, but otherwise used the rest of the ingredients as called for (so it wasn’t a totally daring experiment). It actaully turned out to be REALLY good and I will definitely be making it again. I love weekends!

I had so much fun over break with my new Cuisinart food processor that I’m vowing to make more time for all-things-culinary this semester - a New Year’s resolution of sorts. The good thing about being back in school is that it gives me time to ponder things gastronomic, so what I lose in culinary preparation I gain in culinary contemplation. It doesn’t taste as good but, hey, taste is so subjective anyway!

I purchased the most recent Fine Cooking magazine mainly for some Indian recipes but while going through it I came across a recipe for Apple Brown-Butter Jalousie (the link is to an article preview only - sorry!). I needed a dessert, and since I’m still enjoying Christmas break and had some time to bake, I decided to give it a try. When I actually had puff pastry dough in the freezer I knew this was meant to be!

It was easier than I expected and I really did feel like a(n amateur) pastry chef when I served it. Hey, it’s a start! So if you’re in the mood for something sweet, I highly recommend this one.

Hi and Welcome to Food=Life. The kitchen is officially open. I was actually thinking a good first post would be to introduce you to my kitchen, and then I saw that Ilva at Lucullian Delights was hosting a “Show Us Your Kitchen” event and that was all I needed.

Food=Life is a blog about the intersection of food, cooking, culture and communication. My interest in food extends beyond recipes and cooking to food writing and food reading, food culture and food stories, oh yes, and a <strike>love of</strike> <strike>obsession with</strike> fetish for kitchen gadgets. But enough about me, let me introduce you to my kitchen…

It’s definitely a cozy kitchen. What I like = the spice rack on the back wall (under the hanging pots). The top shelf is for bottles that I use frequently (olive oil, balsamic vinegar, rice wine vinegar, Tabasco, etc.). The other five shelves are spices arranged alphabetically (and a rice cooker on the bottom shelf). I created this myself. I’ve never found spice racks that work for me so when we moved here I decided to design my own spice shelves. I measured the kitchen and actually found shelves as Ikea that didn’t need to be cut. The clearance between the shelves and the freezer door (when open) is about an inch. It’s close but it works.

What I don’t like = that there’s not enough counter space to roll out pizza dough. This may be my incentive to learn to hand-toss my pizza dough!!

In addition to what you see in the picture, I have a few things stored on a shelf in my office (just across the hall from the cutout over the sink). Even some things that get used frequently, like my wok, end up back there just for safe keeping.

The newest addition to my kitchen is the Cuisinart 14-cup food processor that I got for Christmas (it’s between the white blender and chrome toaster in picture on the left above). I love it. I think I’ve used it every day since 12/28 (when I got back from Christmas traveling). It’s totally awesome, but I will save that for another post, or 50!

So there you have it, my humble kitchen.
